The Story Behind This Print

This artwork tells the story of Sour (Tyre) through two perspectives, each capturing a different chapter of one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.

Sour | Tyre | The Island

From above, she stretches into the Mediterranean like a lion's head. Bold. Grounded. Impossible to ignore.

You see the city, the buildings, and the golden shoreline that so many believe is among the most beautiful in the world. Within minutes, you move from soft sand to rocky shores, from sea to souk, from quiet mornings to streets full of life.

But Sour has never been known only for her beauty.

When Alexander the Great stood at her shores, she refused to surrender. Determined to reach the island city, he buried the sea with stone, forever changing its geography and transforming it from an island into the peninsula we know today.

Yet even then, Sour remained herself.

This piece carries that spirit.

Sour is joy.

Sour is sass.

Sour has never been easy to conquer.

Tyre | Sour | The Ruins

The second artwork takes you to the mainland entrance of ancient Tyre, where the great Roman arch still stands near the path history remembers Alexander the Great crossing after building his causeway through the sea.

What stands before you is more than stone.

It is the meeting place of myth and memory.

The Tyrians were among the great Phoenician people who carried knowledge across the Mediterranean. Through Cadmus, they gave the world the alphabet. Through Europa, daughter of Tyre, they inspired stories that would shape civilizations. Through their mastery of Tyrian purple, they transformed a color into a symbol of royalty itself.

This artwork honors a city that has never simply belonged to the past.

It continues to shape the stories we tell today.

At Maraseel, we transformed these stories into watercolor digital artworks, layered them with Arabic calligraphy inspired by the enduring spirit of Sour, and created keepsakes that allow a piece of home to live wherever you do.

The Motherland Project

Some places never really leave us.

They continue to live in our memories, our conversations, our accents, and the stories we tell the next generation.

Motherland was created to preserve those places through art.

Each print is inspired by a real village, city, or neighborhood in Lebanon, thoughtfully brought to life through photography, Arabic calligraphy, and storytelling. More than wall décor, it is an invitation to remember where you come from, honor the people who shaped you, and keep a piece of home close no matter where life has taken you.

Whether it hangs in your living room, office, or is gifted to someone who longs for home, every Motherland print becomes more than artwork. It becomes a conversation, a memory, and a reminder that some places continue to live within us long after we've left them.
